Survey Finds Healthcare Employers Relied More on Retirement Plan Providers in 2010

Healthcare employers are relying more on retirement plan providers to administer employee retirement plans and help them meet their fiduciary responsibilities, according to a survey of nearly 200 healthcare plan sponsors conducted by Diversified Investment Advisors.

The survey, titled “Retirement Plan Trends in Today’s Healthcare Market — 2010,” found that in 2010, 79 percent of plan sponsors reporting having an advisor, an increase over 2009. Thirty-seven percent of healthcare plan sponsors also employed on-site representatives, and 13 percent of sponsors relied on their plan provider to arrange for an auditor.

Vendor changes are on the rise as well. Respondents said they plan to change recordkeepers (11 percent), consolidate recordkeeping for multiple plans (9 percent), change advisors (8 percent), reduce the number of plan providers (4 percent) and consolidate investments for multiple plans (4 percent).
