Staten Island University Hospital, workers reach tentative deal, avert strike

Staten Island (N.Y.) University Hospital's North site, part of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, reached a tentative agreement with nurses June 27, averting a strike next week.

The tentative three-year contract covers 1,200 North site nurses represented by the New York State Nurses Association.

Staten Island University Hospital Executive Director Brahim Ardolic, MD, praised the tentative deal, but did not go into specifics about the terms of the agreement.

"The tentative agreement is fair to the hospital and our nurses, providing them with competitive salary increases and benefit enhancements that promote their health and wellness," he stated to Becker's Hospital Review. "The proposed contract also reaffirms SIUH's ongoing commitment to appropriate staffing levels that ensure our patients will continue to receive safe, high quality care and enable the hospital to expand its clinical services to meet future community needs."

Pat Kane, a registered nurse at Staten Island University Hospital and NYSNA treasurer, also applauded the tentative agreement, calling it "terrific news for our patients, the residents of Staten Island as well as the nurses who work day and night to care for a community that many call home."

"In the wake of the Supreme Court decision regarding the Janus case, it is also important to notice what can happen when union brothers and sisters come together and fight for what they believe in – the result is better pay, better benefits and a better work place for everyone," she stated to Becker's.

The tentative agreement comes after nearly a year of negotiations, sometimes contentious, with nurses recently notifying hospital officials of their intent to strike over alleged unfair labor practices.

Nurses will vote on the tentative deal June 28 and June 29.
