A major winter storm dumped several feet of snow in the Buffalo, N.Y., area, and local hospitals are having a difficult time staying staffed as the snow keeps employees from work.

More than 1,100 employees at two CHI Franciscan Health hospitals — St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood, Wash., and St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash. — walked off the job Tuesday as part of a one-day strike.

Pittsburgh-based UPMC is being ordered to put employees back on payroll within two weeks after a claim that it violated federal labor law when four employees involved in unionizing activities were fired, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
