Roughly 1,200 service and technical workers at Pittsburgh-based Allegheny General Hospital have voted to join SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, the state's largest healthcare union, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times.

Communications Workers of America, a union that represents thousands of workers in the Buffalo, N.Y.-based Catholic Health System, is looking at the system's financial strengths and weaknesses as it prepares for future contract negotiations, according to The Buffalo News.

Frontline workers — patient intake coordinators, medical assistants, certified nursing assistants and dietary service staff, for example — are the face of hospitals and health systems, yet executives may find it difficult to engage and connect with these workers.

Officials from Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pa., and East Stroudsburg, Pa.-based Pocono Health System have said no jobs are expected to be lost during their pending merger, according a report from the Pocono Record.
