Nurses at University Medical Center New Orleans, represented by National Nurses United, plan to begin a three-day strike Nov. 11 — the hospital’s fifth since October 2024.
The union represents 600 nurses at the hospital, according to an union news release.
University Medical Center, part of LCMC Health, employs 2,779 people and has been in negotiations with the union since March 2024. UMC nurses went on strike in October 2024 and again in February, May and July 2025.
In a statement shared with Becker’s, UMC said it “has participated in 36 total sessions, including eight negotiation sessions since the July 2025 strike. UMC has four additional sessions already scheduled before year-end.”
Union members contend that management has refused to address nurses’ concerns about staff retention.
“What we’re asking for are measures to make sure those nurses stay here, working at our hospital in our community,” Emily Blau, RN, said in the release. “It’s time to get this deal done so we can protect not just our current nurses, but ensure we have great nurses working here for years to come.”
“Our dedicated team continues to serve our community with compassion and professionalism, and we have full confidence in our ability to do so during this strike,” hospital administration said. “UMC remains committed to providing the highest quality care to every patient and to reaching a fair and reasonable agreement through continued good-faith negotiations.”
