Local Health Departments Lose Jobs

The total number of local health department employees fell from 190,000 in 2008 to 162,000 last year, a drop of roughly 12 percent, according to the 2013 edition of the National Association of County and City Health Officials Profile of Local Health Departments.

The median number of employees has declined in departments serving populations of 25,000 or more since 2010.

Employees at LHDs range from registered nurses, physicians, health educators and nutritionists to emergency preparedness staff and environmental health workers.

There are 2,532 LHDs in the nation, according to the report.
