Nurses at Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals Niles (Mich.) Hospital have voted against joining Teamsters Local 406, an affiliate of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, in an election held by the National Labor Relations Board.
The vote, tallied Feb. 26, was 82-47 against unionization, with four ballots challenged, according to the NLRB. The proposed bargaining unit included 152 eligible full-time and regular part-time registered nurse employees, including registered nurses, nurse practitioners and certified registered nurse anesthetists.
Corewell Health, which has dual headquarters in Grand Rapids and Southfield, Mich., said in a statement shared with Becker’s after the vote: “We fully support their decision and appreciate their support of Corewell Health Niles leadership. We are proud to serve our patients and believe leaders having a direct working relationship with nurses is best for our patients, our community and our nurses.”

The vote in Niles comes after nurses at Corewell Health’s Southeast Michigan hospitals voted to join Teamsters Local 2024 in November 2024. The vote covered nearly 10,000 nurses at nine facilities in the Detroit area.
Corewell Health includes Corewell East facilities in Dearborn, Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, Taylor, Trenton, Troy, Wayne and Southfield.
