How to evaluate a telehealth platform today — a guide for IT

Aided by relaxed regulations, many hospitals and health systems launched and expanded telehealth programs in a matter of days in response to COVID-19. The quick demand in access often meant using platforms such as FaceTime and Skype for virtual visits covering a wide range of conditions, from urgent care, primary care, medication follow-up and COVID-19 screenings.

Going forward, telehealth will be a key part of healthcare delivery going forward. Yet, not alltelemedicine platforms are created equal, and the field is maturing quickly. This requires IT decisionmakers to educate themselves more than ever on this technology. Now is the time for IT decision makers to step back and evaluate platforms in order to find a “best fit” platform with staying power.

Implementing safe, secure and easy-to-use telehealth solutions — along with several other important criteria — can result in a number of benefits, including better patient experiences, improved clinical outcomes, increased patient access, greater market share, and even a stronger bottom line. Achieving these can be highly dependent on the platform chosen, however.
