Lahey Health in Burlington, Mass., is expanding its reach further in the state, as it has signed a letter of intent to affiliate with Winchester (Mass.) Hospital.

Under the agreement, which is not a full-scale merger or acquisition, leaders from the 229-bed Winchester will join Lahey's board of trustees, and the hospital will become an affiliate of the system as part of a "shared governance" model, according to a news release. Lahey's board includes members from its previous merger with Northeast Health System in Beverly, Mass., which was completed last year.

Lahey and Winchester will also work closely to build networks within primary care, women's health, emergency medicine and cancer care.

Lahey includes Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, a teaching hospital of the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. In April, Lahey also announced it has entered partnership talks with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
