Prospective bidders include Morgantown-based West Virginia University Medicine and Wheeling (W. Va.) Hospital. WVU Medicine has expressed interest in SGH for several months and Wheeling has proposed a merger with SGH, according to the report.
Hospital attorney Bob Coffield said the sale’s first step will be assessing SGH’s assets and liabilities, which he said could take two to six months. He said any sale agreement could require a buyer to sustain SGH’s facility and its emergency department and protect the positions of hospital employees, The Intelligencer reports.
“I really think this is the best thing to do,” Sistersville Mayor Bill Rice said at the city council’s Dec. 20 meeting. “If we are going to keep the hospital operational, someone has to help us.”
