University of Arkansas Medical Sciences, St. Vincent Health Merger Delayed

Arkansas' Legislative Council expressed concern regarding the potential joint venture between University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock and St. Vincent Health System in Little Rock, asking for more time to review a contract to explore the merger, according to a Talk Business report.

The Legislative Council's review subcommittee recommended a contract between UAMS and Deloitte Consulting to evaluate a potential affiliation between UAMS and St. Vincent Health System. The two organizations announced this potential deal in August. UAMS is a public organization and St. Vincent Health System is Catholic. Both hope to pursue a deal that would preserve their identities.

Sens. Joyce Elliot (D-Ark.) and David Johnson (D-Ark.) asked to review the deal more closely after receiving phone calls from concerned individuals. The concern stems from how a partnership between a state-run hospital and a Catholic hospital would handle women's issues, according to the report.
