Jackson-based University of Mississippi Medical Center has completed its acquisition of Merit Health Madison, a 67-bed facility in Canton, Miss..
Merit Health Madison now operates as UMMC Madison, according to a June 9 news release from the health system. The deal was finalized May 1.
The acquisition builds on a business relationship that began in 2019, when UMMC physicians started performing procedures at the hospital, according to the release. As the full owner of the facility, UMMC will “integrate the facility more closely into its academic and health care system.”
UMMC Madison will operate as a community hospital and provide emergency services, medical-surgical care, ICU, pulmonology, pathology, cardiology, radiology, neurology, nephrology, general surgery and GI services.
“We’ve been staffing the emergency department for some time now, but operational challenges, such as having different electronic medical record systems, highlighted the need for a more unified approach,” UMMC’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs Alan Jones, MD, said in the release. “Acquiring the hospital allows us to overcome those hurdles and expand our capacity to care for patients.”
UMMC became the full owner of the hospital after completing the purchase from a subsidiary of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.
“Madison is the only Merit Health hospital included in the transaction,” a CHS spokesperson told Becker’s. “Other Merit Health hospitals in the Jackson market, along with Merit Health locations in Hattiesburg, Vicksburg and Natchez, were not impacted by this transaction.”
