If the merger is approved, it would see the development of a university hospital jointly owned but located on two campuses: Hartford and Farmington. The Farmington facility would be owned by UConn and by Hartford Healthcare; the Hartford facility would continue to be owned and operated by Hartford Healthcare.
UConn is holding discussions with leaders of other hospitals, but chose to move ahead with developing the framework with Hartford as its response to a "solicitation of interest" request from UConn was one of the more “comprehensive” responses, said UConn President Michael J. Hogan, in the release.
The framework also outlines plans for a “Connecticut Health Collaborative” which would be comprised of a network of affiliates including St. Francis Hospital, The Hospital of Central Connecticut, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Hartford Hospital and The UConn Health Center.
“These hospitals, through the collaborative, would seek to support the educational and research mission of all of the affiliates,” said Cato T. Laurencin, MD, PhD, UConn’s vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, according to the release.
