UC San Diego, Scripps Health collaborate in hospice care, training and research

UC San Diego Health System is partnering with San Diego-based Scripps Health to provide improved continuity of patient care, fellowship training and research in hospice and palliative medicine.

Under a new five-year agreement, both parties will work together to provide outpatient and inpatient hospice care for UC San Diego patients, allowing physicians at UC San Diego to better coordinate post-acute care for patients with chronic illness, according to a news release.

In addition, the hospice and palliative medicine fellowship program, an extension of a fellowship that was previously offered through San Diego Hospice, will train many physicians in the core principles of pain and symptom management, communication skills and care coordination for patients with serious and life-limiting conditions, UC San Diego CEO Paul Viviano said in a statement. The program will engage faculty from both organizations.

The partnership between Scripps and UC San Diego also includes provisions for the two organizations to collaborate on clinical trials and research programs involving hospice and palliative care, according to a news release.

Scripps Hospice is one of the largest providers of hospice services in the San Diego region. UC San Diego is the region's only academic health system.
