Steward Health Care System, based in Boston, is launching a new insurance plan that requires consumers to use it for routine healthcare needs with Steward-affiliated physicians and facilities, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
For-profit Steward plans to work with non-profit Tufts Health Plan to create Steward Community Choice, expected to go into effect Jan. 1. The organizations are planning for SCC to be priced as much as 15-30 percent less than comparable plans. The price is expected to be appealing enough to overcome concerns about restricted choices in medical providers, according to the report.
Ralph de la Torre, CEO of Steward, said the plan will “keep care in the community, where it’s less expensive,” according to the report.
