In approving the Landmark transaction, Mr. Fine accepted the recommendation of the Health Services Council, an advisory board, to permit Steward Healthcare to take control of Landmark and its subsidiary, Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island in Smithfield, which has been in receivership for four years.
The deal now awaits approval from the Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin to meet the terms of state law.
