The hospitals signed a letter of intent to merge in September. The Vatican’s approval was required for the partnership to proceed. The request, petitioned by Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, was granted Oct. 17.
As a member of Sinai Health System, Holy Cross Hospital will remain a Catholic hospital and fully comply with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Ethical and Religious Directors for Catholic Healthcare, according to the report. The Sisters of St. Casmir will remain the religious sponsors of Holy Cross Hospital.
The partnership is subject to review by each organization’s board as well as the state of Illinois.
