Corvallis, Ore.-based Samaritan Health Services has received Oregon Health Authority approval for its proposed affiliation with Tacoma, Wash.-based MultiCare Health System.
The approval allows the systems to clear the remaining legal and administrative hurdles to close the transaction, according to an Aug. 24 MultiCare news release.
The affiliation is not final, and the organizations will operate independently until the transaction’s expected Oct. 1 closing.
MultiCare has committed to investing $700 million over 10 years in Samaritan’s region to fund expanded access to care, provider recruitment and retention, facility and technology upgrades, and additional service services in Samaritan’s markets, according to the release.
The systems said no changes are planned through 2027 to the insurance plans Samaritan accepts or the plans offered by Samaritan Health Plans. Samaritan’s board approved the affiliation in October 2025, and the deal underwent state review earlier this year. A phased integration process is set to begin after closing.
Samaritan is a nonprofit regional system serving more than 280,000 residents in Oregon’s Benton, Lincoln and Linn counties, with five hospitals, physician clinics and health insurance plans. MultiCare is a nonprofit system with more than 300 care locations and 13 hospitals across Washington state.
