Report shows decline in true mergers and acquisitions

More hospitals and health systems are participating in affiliations, collaborations, joint ventures and partnerships rather than true mergers and acquisitions, according to a recent Irving Levin Associates report.

The report shows there have been only 48 mergers and acquisitions so far this year. Last year, there were 84.

Over the last two decades, the most mergers and acquisitions occurred in the following years:

1. 1997 — 197

2. 1996 — 163

3. 1998 — 137

4. 1995 — 128

5. 1999 — 109

6. 2012 — 107

7. 2011 — 93

8. 1994 — 92

9. 2000 — 85

10. 2013 — 84
