Prime Healthcare, Hudson Holdco Make Play for Saint Clare's in New Jersey

The race for a new owner of Saint Clare's Health System in Denville, N.J., is heating up, as two for-profit hospital companies are pursuing a deal, according to a Star-Ledger report.

Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services and Philadelphia-based Hudson Holdco have both submitted bids to purchase three-hospital Saint Clare's, which is currently owned by Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives. Representatives from Prime and Hudson Holdco did not comment on the matter, and CHI said it is in "productive discussions with several major health organizations regarding the transfer of ownership," according to the report.

Atlantic Health System, based in Morristown, N.J., was also in talks to acquire Saint Clare's earlier this year.

Both Prime and Hudson Holdco have been active in the New Jersey market. Prime is set to buy St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic and St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, pending state approval. Hudson Holdco currently owns Bayonne (N.J.) Medical Center, Hoboken (N.J.) University Medical Center and Christ Hospital in Jersey City.
