Parkview Adventist, Central Maine Healthcare Merger to Get Public Hearing

A hearing will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24 in Brunswick, Maine, giving the public a chance to weigh in on a merger between Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick and Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston, according to a Bangor Daily News report.

Central Maine Healthcare filed a letter of intent with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to acquire Parkview Adventist Medical Center in August. Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick filed a competing certificate of need proposal shortly after. Earlier this month, the Department of Health and Human Services' Licensing and Regulatory Services notified Mid Coast that it cannot review its competing CON proposal due to the state's CON law.

According to the report, Mid Coast Hospital spokesman Steve Trockman said the hospital intends to pursue its takeover through a provision in the law that requires the state to consider lower-cost alternatives when ruling on hospital mergers. However, Phyllis Powell, assistant director for the state's licensing office, said that DHHS Commissioner May Mayhew would have to first reject Central Maine's application, according to the report.
