Both Novant and Cape Fear Valley will remain independent and retain local ownership and governance. The partnership is more of a strategic plan to keep healthcare costs down in their areas and share resources when possible. Novant has 13 acute-care hospitals with more than 2,700 beds, and Cape Fear Valley has five hospitals with a cumulative 781 beds.
Novant announced a similar collaboration with Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga., this past summer.
