According to the release, the decision marks the first change in governance for Memorial since it was acquired by the city of Colorado Springs in 1943. Under the agreement, the city will retain ownership of Memorial’s buildings, but the employees and operations will be transferred to UCHealth. In addition, Memorial Hospital for Children in Colorado Springs will be operated by UC Health’s Children’s Hospital of Colorado in Aurora.
UCHealth will begin operating Memorial Oct. 1. At that time, UCHealth will become one of the largest employers in Colorado with 14,000 employees, according to the release.
