MedWest in North Carolina Explores New Capital Partners

The board of directors of Clyde, N.C.-based MedWest voted last week to "explore alignment with a capital partner" for the three-hospital system, currently managed by Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System, according to a report by the Sylva Herald.

The decision comes after two of the MedWest hospitals that are governed by Sylva, N.C.-based WestCare Health System voted to dissolve their partnership with MedWest-Haywood hospital, claiming the larger Haywood was leeching patients and revenue from their own hospitals, according to a report by the Black Mountain News. Haywood's board has not approved the dissolution.

Board members haven't selected a model for the potential alignment and will accept partners' proposals for the next two months, according to the report. During that time, Carolinas HealthCare will continue managing the three hospitals, the report said. It's not clear if a future alignment would replace Carolinas HealthCare's management agreement. Financial details have not been disclosed.
