Lowell, Mass.-based Saints Medical Center has rejected the latest merger offer by non-profit Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital, according to a Lowell Sun report.
Saints Medical Center has rejected at least four previous Lowell offers since 1987, according to the report.
Saints Medical Center has also considered offers from the for-profit organizations Boston-based Steward Health Care Systems and Nashville-based Vanguard Health Systems.
James Lee, associate professor in UMass Lowell's Department of Community Health, suggested that Saints' and its patients' dedication to its Catholic mission is one obstacle to a Saints-Lowell General merger, the report said.
