On June 28, Democratic Gov. Janet Mills signed a revision to the hospital’s state charter into law. The regulatory step was required for the deal to advance. Under the legislation, Mayo’s ownership will be transferred from a quasi-public agency to a nonprofit entity owned by Northern Light.
Ms. Mills’ signature allows Northern Light and Mayo to apply for a required certificate of need from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The deal will also require final approval from the Mayo and Northern Light boards.
If the merger is finalized, Mayo would be the 10th member hospital of Northern Light.
