Drops in Medicaid financing and recent decisions by Governor Bobby Jindal to cut the public health system’s budget are causing the financial problems for the university-run network of hospitals and clinics, which cares for the uninsured and provides much of the state’s medical training. In addition, LSU officials have been warned that reductions in the budget are expected to continue annually, according to the report.
Officials are scrambling for ways to come up with additional financing. Gov. Jindal’s administration is pushing for agreements with private healthcare firms as a way to cut the university system’s costs, according to the report. Unfortunately, LSU Health’s situation is not enticing to potential partners. “We don’t bring a lot to the table at the moment, except we’re going to provide the healthcare professionals,” said LSU System President William Jenkins, according to the report.
