Louisville, Ky., Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will only approve the merger between University of Louisville Hospital and two Catholic Health Initiatives hospitals in Kentucky if all three participants agree to follow Catholic rules for medical care, according to a USA Today report.
The merger would combine University Hospital with Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare, also in Louisville, and Lexington, Ky.-based St. Joseph Health System. Both hospitals are owned by Denver-based CHI.
Archbishop Kurtz’s approval, as well as that of Lexington Archbishop Ronald Gainer, is required for the merged entity to officially be a Catholic health system.
