Kaufman Hall: 76% of hospital deals in 2018 so far involve nonprofit systems

A total of 50 transactions have been announced during the first half of 2018, according to a recent analysis by Kaufman, Hall & Associates published July 12.

Nonprofit hospitals and health systems exhibited the most activity during the first half of the year, with more than 76 percent of announced deals involving nonprofit systems.

Here are four takeaways from the analysis:

1. Sixteen of the 21 deals announced during the second quarter of 2018 involved nonprofit organizations, compared to five transactions involving for-profit acquirers.

2. Pennsylvania saw the most mergers and acquisitions activity in the healthcare space during the second quarter, with three announced transactions.

3. Four deals announced during the second quarter involved religious-affiliated organizations, while three transactions involved academic health systems.

4. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems was involved in three deals announced during the second quarter, which involved hospitals in Oklahoma, Florida and West Virginia.
