According to officials from Health and Hospital Corp. of Marion County, which operates the hospital and the county health department, renovations to the 95 year-old hospital would not solve mechanical and electrical system failures at the hospital. If unable to rebuild, Wishard would be forced to shut down, leaving a gap in healthcare services in the community, according to the report.
The new hospital, to be built on a portion of land on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus, would include a 303-bed hospital, outpatient clinic building, power plant, parking garage and facilities for medical education and research, according to the report.
Wishard is proposing to fund the construction of a new hospital with a series of low-interest public bonds that would not require a property tax increase, as officials said in the report that the hospital has adequate revenue to meet all bond obligations.
A county-wide referendum, paid for by Health and Hospital Corp., will be held on Nov. 3 to approve the bonds for the project.
