A tornado demolished the hospital, then known as Sumter Regional Hospital, in March 2007, but staff managed to evacuate all 70 patients there at the time.
The hospital, operating out of temporary structures since the incident, joined Phoebe Putney Health System in 2008, prompting the name change.
The new hospital will feature a four-story, 76-bed inpatient facility and separate buildings for oncology, surgery, women’s and children’s health, wellness and orthopedics.
