Under the agreement, Backus will become part of Hartford HealthCare in a new eastern health region, according to the report. The two health systems also agreed to develop healthcare services, including a trauma program at Backus, a comprehensive cancer services network, extensive primary and outpatient care, enhanced cardiac care services, a new preventive medicine institution and a new data center.
Although Backus would be part of Hartford HealthCare, it would retain its name, identity, medical staff and licenses, according to the report. The agreement is still subject to state and federal regulators.
In May 2012, the two health systems began the partnership process by signing a memorandum of understanding.
