Greenville Health System reportedly interested in acquiring CHS-owned South Carolina health system

Several elected officials allege they were told Greenville (S.C.) Health System expressed interest in acquiring Spartanburg, S.C.-based Mary Black Health System, which is owned and operated by Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, according to The State.

State Reps. William Chumley, R-Spartanburg, and Merita Allison, R-Spartanburg, along with state Sen. Scott Talley, R-Greenville and Spartanburg Counties, told The State they were informed of GHS' interest in Mary Black Health System last week, according to the report.

David Britt, Spartanburg County councilman, said he was informed of the specific price Greenville Health System would pay for Mary Black, but did not disclose his information source, according to the report.

Both health systems denied the potential sale. A spokesperson for CHS told The State the for-profit hospital operator is "very invested in Mary Black Health System and remain[s] committed to [the] community … there are no discussions about a potential sale of Mary Black Health System," according to the report.

A spokesperson for Greenville Health System reiterated CHS' comments, stating, "GHS is not in negotiations to buy Mary Black," according to the report.
