Doctors officials and Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia confirmed the hospital had engaged in preliminary discussions with UCSF, according to the report. UCSF is not in direct discussions with Doctors but is talking to local healthcare organizations and to Contra Costa County Health Services, which Doctors is affiliated with, UCSF Chief Strategy and Development Officer Jay Harris told the Times.
Doctors — a safety-net hospital with a history of financial trouble — wants to achieve financial stability, according to the report. As of January 2013, Doctors had been running with a deficit of $17 million annually. The center previously considered partnering with Avanti Hospitals in El Segundo, Calif., in order to sustain its operations.
