The boards of trustees for both organizations have voted to approve a memorandum of understanding for a possible merger. The MOU outlines steps to create a new, integrated health system that would combine the operations of both Continuum and Mount Sinai.

“Our goal as an integrated healthcare system is to provide exceptional medical care to New Yorkers,” Kenneth Davis, MD, president and CEO of The Mount Sinai Medical Center, said in the release. “The combination will create more economies of scale, increase efficiencies and expand access to advanced primary and specialty care throughout this citywide network.”

Continuum already includes Beth Israel Medical Center-Milton, Beth Israel Brooklyn, St. Luke’s Hospital and Roosevelt Hospital, all in New York City.

The next step for the systems is further due diligence and the development of a definitive agreement.
