Colorado, Kansas Healthcare Systems Proceed to Arbitration Over Attempted Hospital Acquisitions

Exempla Healthcare System in Denver and the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, based in Lenexa, Kan., are heading to arbitration over Sisters of Charity’s attempt to become the sole owner of several Exempla hospitals last year, according to the Denver Business Journal.

Sisters of Charity tried to purchase Arvada, Colo.-based Community First Foundation’s stake in Exempla-owned Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, Colo. for $311 million.

But Exempla’s boards of directors sued to block the deal, according to the Denver Business Journal report, saying the transaction would take proceeds away from its intended purpose and jeopardize non-sectarian healthcare at Lutheran and Good Samaritan.

If the deal goes through, Lutheran and Good Samaritan will have to comply with Catholic medical directives, which prohibit contraceptive services and many kinds of sterilization procedures.
