Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems exited both Pennsylvania and Arkansas following the completion of two separate divestitures, as the for-profit system continues to reshape its portfolio.
CHS now comprises 60 hospitals across 12 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, according to its website.
The system completed the sale of four Arkansas hospitals June 1 to Joplin, Mo.-based Freeman Health System for $110 million.
The hospitals are part of CHS subsidiary Springdale, Ark.-based Northwest Health and include Northwest Medical Center–Bentonville (Ark.), a 128-bed hospital;Northwest Medical Center–Springdale, a 222-bed hospital; Willow Creek Women’s Hospital, a 64-bed hospital in Johnson, Ark.; Siloam Springs (Ark.) Regional Hospital, a 73-bed hospital; and associated outpatient centers and practices.
“With this acquisition, Freeman will double in size, expanding our ability to serve patients and communities across four states, increasing access to care and strengthening the future for those who depend on us,” Alex Curran, senior vice president and chief strategy officer of Freeman Health System, said in a May 31 LinkedIn post.
The transaction follows CHS’ February exit from Pennsylvania, where the system sold Commonwealth Health, a three-hospital system based in Scranton, Pa., to the nonprofit Tenor Health Foundation.
Under the deal, Tenor acquired Regional Hospital of Scranton (186 beds), Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton (122 beds) and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital (369 beds). CHS had previously attempted to sell the hospitals to WoodBridge Healthcare for $120 million in 2024, but that deal collapsed after WoodBridge was unable to satisfy funding requirements.
