In August, Mercy Health System announced it had begun negotiating a sale to Steward, which would make it wholly owned by a for-profit organization, according to the report. Mercy Health System of Maine includes two flagship hospitals in Portland and several smaller healthcare facilities in the area.
Meanwhile, CHE, which owns Mercy Health System, and Trinity announced a non-binding letter of intent to come together in a unified health system earlier this month. The consolidation would create a health system serving individuals in 21 states with 82 hospitals, 89 continuing care facilities and home health and hospice programs.
A spokesman for CHE has said the talks with Trinity could take as long as seven months, meaning Mercy could leave Catholic Health East for Steward before CHE could merge with Trinity, according to the report.
Steward would be expected to make significant investments in the Mercy system if the deal is finalized, according to the report.
