The applications have also been submitted for an “expedited review process,” which speeds up the process for hospitals that are financially distressed. MHRI meets the criteria of “financially distressed.” In 2011, the 294-bed MHRI, which is a teaching hospital for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, lost more than $8.4 million (pdf) due to rising amounts of charity care and bad debt.
Financial details of the affiliation between CNE and MHRI have still not been revealed, though the two organizations have previously cited numerous principles to the deal. CNE, which includes three acute-care hospitals, and MHRI announced their definitive affiliation agreement in January.
