Benedictine Hospital and nearby Kingston Hospital merged in 2007, and HealthAlliance floated a plan in July 2012 to consolidate the two facilities into one campus at the Benedictine site. In September, 40 staff members, including some executives, were laid off.
Under the current agreement, the names of both facilities will be changed to HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus and Broadway Campus. According to a HealthAlliance news release, the sisters will still provide pastoral services at the hospital, but the hospital will be unrestricted in reproductive procedures formerly prohibited by Catholic doctrine. HealthAlliance will also help the sisters establish an off-campus residence as part of the agreement.
