Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network finalized an affiliation agreement July 1 to acquire Beaver, Pa.-based Heritage Valley Health System, bringing the system’s footprint to 16 hospitals.
The two parties, which shared plans to affiliate in October 2025, received formal approval from state and federal regulators the week of June 29, according to a July 1 news release.
The deal brings Heritage Valley Health System’s two hospitals, 36 physician offices, seven multispecialty outpatient “neighborhood” facilities, 3,000 employees and several other services under AHN’s network.
Heritage Valley’s two hospitals, Heritage Valley Beaver (Pa.) and Heritage Valley Sewickley (Pa.), will be rebranded to AHN Beaver Hospital – Heritage Valley and AHN Sewickley Hospital – Heritage Valley.
“This affiliation secures the future of Heritage Valley, by not only preserving, but significantly strengthening the tradition of caring and clinical excellence that has defined our health system, and its people, for more than a century,” Norm Mitry, president and CEO of Heritage Valley, said in the release.
AHN is part of Highmark Health. Together, the two parties have invested more than $2.5 billion in the last decade to improve access to healthcare services across western Pennsylvania and beyond, including new hospital and outpatient facility construction, expansion and existing facility renovations and investing in new technologies and programs, the release said.
Highmark Health, AHN and Heritage Valley have also committed around $285 million over the next decade toward clinical services and infrastructure at Heritage Valley, which will include the installation of Epic’s electronic health record system across all inpatient and outpatient sites.

SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, which represents more than 25,000 nurses and caregivers in the state and 400 nurses at Heritage Valley Beaver, expressed excitement over the affiliation in a July 1 news release shared with Becker’s.
The nurses also plan to negotiate a new union contract in the spring of 2027.
“The nurses at Heritage Valley Beaver, which is the only acute care hospital in our county, are deeply dedicated to elevating care and services for our community,” the release said. “We look forward to working with Allegheny Health Network and to the investments they can bring to our facility.”
