The following hospital mergers and acquisitions took place within the past week, beginning with the most recent.

1. UPMC Hamot, Lake Erie Regional Health Move Forward With Affiliation
UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., signed a letter of intent to enter a strategic affiliation with Dunkirk-based Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York.

2. Hartford HealthCare, Backus Corp. Sign Memorandum of Understanding
Backus Corp. in Norwich, Conn., parent of Backus Healthcare System, and Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare hve signed a memorandum of understanding to move forward with their proposed affiliation.

3. Heartland Health Joins Mayo Clinic Care Network
Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic expanded its network of local hospitals and systems, adding Heartland Health in St. Joseph, Mo., to its year-old Mayo Clinic Care Network.

4. Sinai Health System, Holy Cross Hospital May Affiliate
Two Chicago hospitals, Sinai Health System and Holy Cross Hospital, began talks to affiliate.

5. Steward Healthcare Merger With Landmark Medical Center Approved
Rhode Island Health Director Michael Fine approved the merger of Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, R.I., with Boston-based Steward Healthcare System.

6. WakeMed Withdraws Hostile Bid for Rex Healthcare
Raleigh, N.C.-based WakeMed Health & Hospitals withdrew its hostile $750 million bid to takeover Rex Healthcare, also based in Raleigh, from state-owned University of North Carolina Health Care System, based in Chapel Hill.

7. Caldwell Memorial Hospital in North Carolina Considers Strategic Partnership
Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir, N.C., considered a strategic partnership with another healthcare system.

8. Medical Group, Former St. Francis CEO Submit Letter of Intent for Former Hawaii Medical Facilities
The San Francisco-based medical group Hampton Health and the former president and CEO of Honolulu-based St. Francis Healthcare, Eugene Tiwanak, submitted a letter of intent to acquire the former Hawaii Medical Center facilities from St. Francis for an undisclosed price.

9. Hershey Medical Center, Lancaster General Partner on Pediatrics
Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center will provide pediatric hospitalists to Lancaster (Pa.) General Hospital.
