7 Statistics on Hospital M&A in 2011

In 2011, the hospital market saw more significant growth in mergers and acquisitions, culminating a five-year trend of increased activity, according to a report from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission.

Here are seven statistics on the hospital M&A market in 2011, based on MedPAC’s report.

•    There were 90 separate hospital M&A deals.
•    Of those deals, 156 individual hospitals were acquired.
•    Roughly 41 percent of the deals involved regional systems acquiring hospitals or other systems.
•    National hospital systems were the buyers in 33 percent of transactions.
•    In 16 percent of deals, hospitals acquired other individual hospitals.
•    Private equity firms were the acquirers in 14 percent of deals.
•    Most hospitals acquired in 2011 were small community hospitals with 160 or fewer inpatient beds, with a majority involving for-profits acquiring non-profits.
