Healthcare M&A Volume Up 6%

During the second quarter of 2011, the healthcare sector posted 243 merger and acquisition deals worth a combined $73.7 billion, representing a 6 percent increase in volume of deals over the first quarter of 2011 and a 3 percent increase over the same quarter a year ago, according to a report by Irving Levin Associates.

Hospitals (32 deals) tied with pharmaceuticals (32 deals) as the third-largest subsector for volume of deals. Long-term care ranked first with 38 deals, followed by medical devices with 36.

Based on preliminary data, the $73.7 billion used to fund second-quarter mergers is up 44 percent over $51.5 billion in Q1 and 61 percent over $45.7 billion in the same quarter of 2010.
