In August, Mid Coast Hospital filed a letter of intent to acquire Parkview Adventist Medical in competition with Lewiston-based Central Maine Healthcare’s letter of intent.
“DHHS cannot and will not review [Mid Coast Hospital’s] submission on a competitive basis with the submission received by the department from Central Maine Healthcare on Aug. 29, 2012,” reads the brief letter from Larry Carbonneau, manager of DHHS’ Health Care Oversight Program, according to the Bangor Daily News.
According to the report, Mid Coast Hospital needs to demonstrate a public need for taking control of Parkview under a new amendment to the certificate of need process, which was passed earlier this year. Steven Trockman, spokesman for Mid Coast Hospital, wrote that nothing has changed as a result of DHHS’ refusal to review the letter of intent. “The decision remains whether or not the state should allow [Central Maine Healthcare] to own Parkview,” said Mr. Trockman, according to the report.
