Tenn. OB-GYN residency on probation for host of issues

Johnson City-based East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine is under fire for the quality of the training provided in its obstetrics-gynecology residency, as well as residencies in three other departments, according to WJHL.

Its OB-GYN residency is on probationary accreditation for the second year, while three other departments — family medicine, internal medicine and critical care and pulmonary disease — are on continued accreditation with warning.

ETSU's OB-GYN residency continues to operate on probation due to the following issues named by WJHL:

  • Lack of hands-on experience with deliveries
  • Inadequate supervision and instruction
  • Fear of retaliation from faculty evaluations

After the first year of probation, ETSU hired three more faculty members and adjusted curriculum, but many issues persist, according to the report. This year, ACGME cited an addition issue — that not enough graduates were passing the written portion of the board exams the first time. The school told WJHL they are continuing to work to resolve the issues.

The three other departments are operating on warning status due to a variety of issues regarding the quality of training provided and how well graduates perform on board exams, according to the report.
