Erie, Pa.-based LECOM, with additional campuses in Greenburg, Pa., and Bradenton, Fla., has sought to obtain accreditation for the proposed Elmira campus for more than a year. The Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation denied the college’s previous two accreditation requests in August 2015 and April 2016, according to the report.

Officials had hoped to open the Elmira campus this fall, according to the report.

A county representative told the Stargazette LECOM officials are working through an appeal process with the commission.

“We’re in the final stages of hopefully making a medical school a reality in this community and LECOM has had some problems in getting the final accreditation,” a county representative told the Stargazette Thursday. “It’s still pending an appeal process on a positive decision. The senator has reached out and feels that we should get that accreditation and this will help LECOM and help the community to make this medical school a reality. He’s coming to help us get to the finish line.”
