Providence to help OHSU with heart transplants 6 months after program's shutdown

The Providence Heart and Vascular Institute in Renton, Wash., has stepped in to help heart transplant patients after Portland, Ore.-based OHSU deactivated its program last fall, according to KATU 2 News.

Three things to know:

1. OHSU discontinued its heart transplant program in August 2018, citing inadequate staffing. Officials said the following month they plan to conduct a peer review of program.

2. OHSU physicians provided a statement to KATU 2 News on Feb. 21, stating Providence's Heart Institute has taken over patients' treatment. Providence said it has also hired additional staff to help with the increase in patients, and will aid patients who have to travel for treatment.

"Providence as well has kind of stepped up for patients who do not have the financial resources to relocate and to spend time, spend the three months after transplant in another city because insurance doesn't always cover that, personal resources frequently don't cover it," Dan Oseran, MD, executive medical director of the Providence Heart Institute Oregon, told the publication.

3. OHSU previously said it will reopen the heart transplant program, but has not provided a specific timeline.
