LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport Chancellor and Dean of the School of Medicine G. E. Ghali, MD, fired Dr. Nanda from his position as chairman last week, the report states.

In an Oct. 4 letter to LSU’s board of supervisors obtained by The Times, 55 of Dr. Nanda’s colleagues said the former chairman’s dismissal represented “a personal attack on a man who has dedicated his career to LSUHSC-Shreveport and the education of students and residents.”

Dr. Nanda’s colleagues said Dr. Ghali’s explanation for the decision was administrators sought to “move in a different direction,” according to the letter.

Dr. Nanda was named chairman of the neurosurgery department in 1995. Despite his removal as chairman of the neurosurgery department, Dr. Nanda will remain a tenured member of the medical school’s faculty, according to the report.

While it is unclear who started the petition, the document is directed at Dr. Ghali, LSU President F. King Alexander, PhD, and Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards.

The petition also includes a copy of the letter sent to LSU’s board of supervisors and signed by Dr. Nanda’s colleagues.

A spokesperson for LSU Health Shreveport told The Times Oct. 9, “LSU Health Shreveport does not comment on employment matters.”
