New Jersey Senate Ponders Physician Student Loan Forgiveness Bill

Student loan forgiveness for physicians in New Jersey is a possibility, as a bill detailing a proposed program has been sent to the state senate, according to a report by The Star-Ledger.

The bill, sponsored by State Sen. Robert Singer (R-Ocean), passed the Senate Education Committee last week. If the new bill works its way through the state legislature and gets the governor's signature, physicians who work for at least 10 years in underserved areas of the state would have their medical school loans forgiven.

"By providing these incentives, we can attract more doctors to needed specialties and assure New Jersey residents aren't left with insufficient care," Sen. Singer told The Star-Ledger. Currently, the state has a shortage of primary care physicians, according to the report.
